Gundam
Annihilatiom |
|
A total conversion based on the Japanese staple for robots and series. As you can imagine, K-Bots become mechas as the Federation fights it out with the Zeon. There's a small number of bueatifully crafted maps here, but no other downloads as of yet. See also Gundam TA's modDATABASE listing.
GA has made the jump to the TA Spring Project.

Imperial Authority |
|
A Star Wars unit pack. While most mods assume you have the Core Contingency, this mod is designed to work with the original pre-expansion version of Total Annihilation, patched to 3.1. This isn't compatible with any other packs or mods (or expansions, by the sounds of it). The Imperial Authority mod is mostly all the spacecraft from the Star Wars franchise: X-Wings, TIE fighters, etc. plus a few custom variations. See also Star Wars TA. Current version: 0.38. |

TA: Dark Suns
(TADS)
|
|
TA: Dark Suns (TADS) is an old, old mod that had a great start, stalled quickly, went quiet and eventually evaporated into vapourware before it could get anything more than a basic unit pack out. Many years of non-existence passed. Its contemporary at the time, The Final Frontier went on to bigger and better things, and there was a little gossip over whether there was rivalry between the two mods or when they were going to cooperate. Dark Suns generally had a more sophisticated look and feel over TA:FF, and it was a bit of a shame to see it go. It had a light, subtle feel, wheras the Final Frontier mod went for heavily armed capital shipping.
Recently, the TA: Independence War appeared and a "final" version of Dark Suns has been posted at its site, TA:Mutation compatible and ready to download. Its pretty good - you can have clouds of Fighters and Corvettes up in no time and the big ships are suitably biffy enough to form the backbone of your fleet. More to come soon. Current version: 2004 Final. |

TA: Independance War
|
|
This is a very promising space based TC that shows a very strong Homeworld influence. The modelling artwork posted on its TAUniverse forum looked very smart and the actual in-game units are crisp and clean to the eye. As far as I know, this TC has nothing to do with the spaceship sim franchise, Independence War. The TAIW Mod It comes with its own set of maps (which come in a mysterious .two format, but you can just rename as .ufo's and they'll work just fine) Both Arm and Core have exactly the same unit and structure line-ups. Warships seem to bristle with turrets, sometimes up to half a dozen, and there are many ship classes: Fighters, Corvettes, Frigates, and Capitals. This seems to share a close relationship with TA:Dark Suns, and the maps that you can download for this mod all use a "Dark Suns tileset". For once, we have space maps that look great: simple stars on black go a long way with clean cut looking spaceships. I encountered the odd crash now and then, but apart from that it seems to play well. Its well worth having a look at; coming in both TA:Mutation and OTA formats. Current version beta 3.0. |

Star Wars TA |
|
Star Wars TA (SWTA) is, without a doubt, the Star Wars TC for Total Annihilation, if not the total conversion itself. It's easily one of the most popular mods doing the rounds on the TA modding circuit. SWTA uses everything from the original Star Wars right through to the new episodes: The Imperial Stormtroopers and Wookiee units are quite fun, and while all the infantry is very, very small, they're still readable.
Imperial walkers and Rebel hover tanks were added, and then a Droid Pack from Episode One - now the Advanced Fighter Pack has been released, including just about every type of fighter in the Star Wars universe, replacing the TA aircraft as you would expect. SWTA has an excellent web site, including a progress page for the current state of the mod. Slow but steady marks the progress of SWTA, while site updates have been few and far between, but when it does update the quality and playability of mod improves in leaps and bounds. Definitely worth waiting for! Both the SWTA mod and the SWTAWIS mod (see below) are delegating mapping duties to a third mapping and modding site called the Kuat Shipyard.
Recently, this project has been winding up its standard TA version to become Star Wars: Spring, having a prominent presence in the 3D environment of the TA Spring Project.

Star Wars TA:
War In Space |
|
Star Wars TA: War In Space, by the Antirral Royal Engineers, is the Star Wars alternative to the SWTA mod. The War in Space tackles all the spaceships in the game, but the two Star Wars modding groups help each other out. So far there's nothing to see apart from a call for beta testers on the forums and its own SWTAWIS Tileset with two maps made for this tileset. Work is underway on a set of related tilesets, one for the desert planet Tatooine and the the ice planet Hoth at a second site, the Kuat Shipyard. |

TA: Final Frontier (TA:FF) is an old space themed add-on that provides basic and advanced starships and space bases in the unit lineup, about a hundred extra custom units in all. This mod seems almost finished and has been around for a fair few years now. It was one of the first few mods to really cut loose from the normal TA mod and attempt to try something different (that is, something that wasn't just a Star Wars or clone of something else.) TA:FF is notable for its lineup of huge capital shipping. There's a series of space themed maps and tilesets developed to go with it, found at the same site. This total conversion adds quite a different flavour to the original game, and with a separate set of fifteen single player Arm missions, offers a fairly solid alternative to the usual ground based combat.
Last version: 7.4. This version adds nearly a page of changes, new units and adjustments. Its hosted at the massive TA Designers portal. (There's also a version 8, with its own not-quite-all-there-website to go with it). While the maps themselves can be a bit horrific to look sometimes, this is recommended! The Final Frontier now comes with its very own add-on sequel: Beyond the Final Frontier adds a third alien race to the mix. But this is old news.
Final Frontier has abandoned the old flat world of TA, to evolve further in the depths of 3D space in the TA Spring Project.
