Pride of Hiigara
Hiigaran Mothership
Hiigaran Mothership
The Pride of Hiigara has the same role as it did in the original Homeworld, except it sports a more militaristic look and feel. This is the ol' Kushan mega-banana sexed up with extra detailing and features. While the old Kushan Mothership was the heart and soul of the Kushan people during their great migration, this version is nothing more than the flagship of the Hiigaran space navy. Its your mobile base from which all your crews and resources are ultimately derived from. You always get one at the start of a multiplayer game, and losing it is a massive blow to your fleet: its the only vessel that can't be manufactured or replaced.

This new model is certainly a lot tougher than it used to be and its point defences a little more robust. It can still only field Strikecraft attacks, and not in any real numbers, either. It also has near unlimited docking capacity for your Strikecraft and can build everything in the game except the Battlecruiser. Many of its tasks can be (and should be!) delegated to the smaller and lighter Carriers. The Pride of Hiigara has the same movement and turning ability as a glacier, even with all its upgrades. Its vital statistics are basically the same as the Vaygr's Flagship.

Without their own Hyperspace Gate, the Hiigarans have to make do with two Hyperspace upgrades, only available from this mighty vessel. All they do is lower the cost of Hyperspacing in general, but its a important saving, especially when you're running out of RU's and the Vaygr are still popping in and out of hyperspace for free once their Gates are up.

Hiigaran Shipyard
Floating Construction Yard
Hiigaran Shipyard launching a Battlecruiser
The second type of Mothership is the Shipyard. This is a specialised floating industrial district that hyperspaces into the game when it is "built". Their main claim to fame is that they are are the only units in the game that can manufacture the fearsome Battlecruiser. Shipyards, built outside the game map, merely need a Hyperspace Module - you don't need a Capital Facility. Thus, a Carrier or even a Battlecruiser can "call in" this massive vessel to replace a lost Mothership.

They're a lacklustre substitute. While they have lots of lovely module slots, they're clumsy at processing resources or servicing your Strikecraft. Shipyards are like a second class Mothership, emphasising manufacturing over everything else. They can build everything in the game - except motherships - but are less manoeuvrable, much slower and more fragile than The Pride of Hiigara. Most players usually hyperspace them around. They get something like a dozen point defence weapons, but these on their own are invariably overwhelmed. Shipyards, for all their usefulness, are the Achilles Heel of your fleet. Its best to think of them as a floating space base that either needs plenty of attention or should be tucked away in some remote part of the map. Even with both Shipyard Armour and Engine upgrades they are still vulnerable, taking eons to repair with a full complement of Resource Collectors.
