The Hiigarans
Our
heroes, the Hiigarans, are defending their
recently restored Homeworld from the ravages of the crusading Vaygr.
They're good for newcomers to start with: its easier to get going with
the Hiigarans and to a large degree many of their units are straightforward
point'n'shoot kind of guys. They're a bit slower than the Vaygr, and
more defensive. They favour heavier shipping with more functionality.
That is, their ships are very good at what they do, and sort of okay
against what they don't. Their technology is superior to the Vaygr's,
but on a one to one basis the Vaygr forces can be harder hitting - if
they get the drop on our heroes first. Hiigaran tech is both elegant,
weighty and more versatile. Most of its units pack turrets, allowing
them to flank and strafe enemy targets very easily, getting more hits
in without you having to micromanage them so heavily. Ships are streamlined,
compact, high quality vessels; usually shaped like a flattened lozenge
or a streamlined slab.
They don't rely so heavily on their Strikecraft to
cover their units, and its trickier for the Hiigarans to make the most
of their inherent advantages until later in the game. They're vulnerable
to Vaygr Strikecraft swarms until they can
get their Frigates and bigger ships into the
fray. This is the side with all the extra Frigates: they get two extra
ships in this class than the Vaygr, and their Destroyer and Battlecruiser are
definitely better all-purpose warships that can tackle threats from just
about any angle, at any time, without too many restrictions. Hiigarans
enjoy the Ping command which counters what
there is of the Vaygr's minimal stealth capabilities. |
